RIM公司（Research in Motion，RIM，字面译为：动态研究）是加拿大的一家通信公司，成立于1984年，为通用汽车做联网的红外LED显示板。上世纪90年代的早期，摩托罗拉公司尝试了把电子邮件和寻呼结合起来，但是当时 PC上的电子邮件都没有怎么发展起来，更不用提无线邮件了，所以摩托罗拉就放弃了。1997年的时候RIM为BellSouth作了一个5千万美元的无线电子邮件设备的单子，在一个使用爱立信技术的称为Mobitex的网络中来帮助运输者跟踪库存。该项目太关键了，使得RIM能够在网络环境下测试其设备。
